Shamonda virus: First human case and first death in France
On October 23, 2026, a first human case of infection by the Shamonda virus was detected in France. Health authorities and the Inserm are looking into the modes of transmission and risks associated with this animal-borne virus. On October 24, a first fatal human case was identified: a 61-year-old man died, with the virus being known to veterinarians since the 1960s in Nigeria. Prof. Antoine Flahault advocates for better consideration of animal diseases in human health.
