Recruitment and employment: persistent tensions in France
On October 25, 2026, the CEO of France Travail stated that the unemployment rate reached 8.3%, while 200,000 to 300,000 jobs remained unfilled and 44% of companies faced recruitment difficulties, with young people particularly affected. The following day, the ministry in charge of apprenticeships called on employers to hire apprentices without contracts, while the agri-food industry saw at least 3,000 jobs threatened by restructuring. On October 27, Thibaut Guilluy again highlighted these recruitment difficulties despite the rise in unemployment. Over the following days, several sectors and regions discussed their labor needs, notably public transport, which said it needed to recruit 100,000 people by 2030, and recruitment forums were organized in the agri-food sector. In early November, articles noted the expectations of Generation Z, the withdrawal of a candidate after more than 1,000 applications, and the potential cost of a bad hire for companies.
