France: surge in copper cable thefts

At the end of October 2026, repeated thefts of cables from electric vehicle charging stations were reported in the Lens area, a phenomenon then described as a new scourge. The incidents subsequently spread to other infrastructure: telephone networks in Cramant and the Laonnois region, public lighting in Mondeville and Aubigny-Les Clouzeaux, copper decorations in the Ain department, and photovoltaic parks in Gironde and elsewhere. In early November, Charge France stated that a thousand fast-charging sites had been affected at the end of October and that cable thefts had increased tenfold over the past year. Legal proceedings have been initiated: three men are standing trial in Esches for the theft of 1.8 km of cables, and six individuals have been formally charged in Gironde for organized gang thefts involving more than one million euros.
